Vedanta Limited is reportedly in advanced stages of pursuing the acquisition of Jaiprakash Associates’ (Jaypee) power business, a move aimed at bolstering its power generation capacity and supporting its expanding metal operations.

The acquisition aligns with Vedanta’s strategic goal of reaching 3,000 MW of power capacity, positioning the company to become a stronger integrated player in the energy and resources sector.

Jaypee’s Power Assets: The Centerpiece of Vedanta’s Expansion

Vedanta has reportedly offered a net present value (NPV) of ₹12,505 crore, which includes an upfront payment of ₹4,000 crore.
The total bid value is estimated at around ₹17,000 crore, making Vedanta the front-runner in the race for Jaypee’s power assets.

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has already granted approval for the proposal, clearing a major regulatory hurdle and paving the way for the next phase of the transaction.

Strategic Fit with Vedanta’s Energy Plans

The acquisition would enhance Vedanta’s power generation portfolio, which currently includes assets from Athena, Serentica, and multiple captive power plants serving its aluminium and zinc operations.

By integrating Jaypee’s power assets, Vedanta aims to secure reliable and cost-efficient energy supply, ensuring operational efficiency across its industrial base.

Financial Snapshot

Vedanta’s power segment currently contributes about ₹2,195 crore to consolidated revenue, accounting for just over 5% of total earnings.
For the quarter ended September 2025, the segment reported an EBITDA of ₹228 crore, representing roughly 2% of consolidated EBITDA.
