Tata Power Company Limited has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Druk Green Power Corporation to develop a structured skill development ecosystem aimed at supporting Bhutan’s planned 5,000 MW clean energy expansion.

The agreement was formalised on May 18, 2026, in Thimphu in the presence of Bhutan’s Prime Minister Lyonchhen Tshering Tobgay, with senior leadership from both organisations participating in the signing ceremony.

Focus on Workforce Development for Clean Energy Expansion

The initiative is designed to create a trained workforce capable of handling the operation, maintenance, and management of large-scale renewable energy projects being developed across Bhutan.

Under the partnership, Tata Power Skill Development Institute (TPSDI) will play a central role in designing and delivering structured training programmes for the energy sector workforce.

Role of Tata Power Skill Development Institute

TPSDI will contribute its technical expertise in power sector training, along with curriculum design and hands-on learning modules tailored to hydropower and renewable energy operations.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Designing safety training programmes for energy projects
  • Developing technical skill modules for operations and maintenance
  • Creating specialised training pathways for long-term clean energy infrastructure needs

Druk Green Power Corporation will support trainee mobilisation, coordination, and facilitation of required governmental approvals in Bhutan.

Phased Skill Development Approach

The programme will be implemented in multiple phases:

  • Phase 1: Safety and operational training foundation
  • Phase 2: Technical skill enhancement for plant operations
  • Phase 3: Advanced specialised training for long-term energy infrastructure management

This structured approach is intended to ensure a steady pipeline of skilled professionals aligned with Bhutan’s expanding renewable energy capacity.

Strengthening Bhutan’s Renewable Energy Expansion Plans

Druk Green Power Corporation is the primary power generation utility in Bhutan and is actively working toward scaling its renewable energy portfolio.

The country has ambitious targets to expand hydro and solar capacity significantly over the next decade, and the partnership is expected to support the human resource requirements for these long-term goals.

Tata Power’s Clean Energy Portfolio Context

Tata Power Company Limited currently operates a diversified energy portfolio exceeding 26 GW of installed capacity, with a strong focus on renewable energy contributing a significant share of its generation mix.

The company has been expanding its presence across clean energy value chains, including generation, transmission, and skill development initiatives linked to energy transition requirements.

Summary

The MoU between Tata Power and Druk Green Power marks a strategic collaboration focused on building a skilled workforce to support Bhutan’s 5,000 MW clean energy expansion. Through structured training programmes delivered via TPSDI, the initiative aims to strengthen operational readiness, improve safety standards, and support long-term renewable energy development in the region.
