Several States Witness Strong Growth in EV Adoption

An analysis of Vahan registration data by The Economic Times showed significant growth in EV adoption across multiple states, particularly in the two-wheeler segment.

Key highlights include:

  • Odisha: EV share increased from 9.5% in 2025 to 17% during March–June 2026.
  • Karnataka: EV penetration reached 17.3%.
  • Tamil Nadu: Rose from 8.3% to 12.8%.
  • Maharashtra: Registered an EV share of 13.1%.
  • Delhi: EV penetration stood at 10.5%.

Across India, electric two-wheelers accounted for 8.4% of new registrations during March–June 2026, compared with 7.7% in January–February and 6.4% during 2025.

Among all states, Goa recorded the highest share of electric two-wheeler registrations at 19%.

Electric Three-Wheelers Continue to Dominate

Electric mobility remained particularly strong in the three-wheeler segment.

According to the report, Assam, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, and Uttarakhand each recorded EV penetration of more than 90% in new three-wheeler registrations, highlighting the rapid electrification of commercial last-mile transport.

Passenger Vehicle Electrification Gains Momentum

The adoption of electric passenger vehicles also continued to improve across major states.

During March–June 2026:

  • Delhi: EV share increased to 13.6%, compared with 7.6% in 2025.
  • Telangana: 12.3%
  • Andhra Pradesh: 7.6%
  • Odisha: 7.5%
  • Gujarat: 5.8%

At the national level, electric cars accounted for 5.4% of new passenger vehicle registrations during the period, up from 4.2% in January–February and 3.4% during 2025.

Monthly EV Registrations Reach New High

The growing acceptance of electric mobility is also reflected in rising registration volumes.

Average monthly EV registrations have steadily increased:

Year / Period Average Monthly EV Registrations
2023 1.32 lakh
2024 1.69 lakh
2025 1.96 lakh
Jan–Feb 2026 2.16 lakh
Mar–Jun 2026 2.82 lakh

EVs accounted for 10.6% of all vehicle registrations during March–June 2026, compared with 8.1% earlier in the year and 6.3% in 2023.

Factors Driving Adoption

The continued rise in EV adoption has been supported by multiple factors, including:

  • Rising consumer preference for cleaner mobility.
  • Growing charging infrastructure.
  • Increasing availability of EV models across segments.
  • Concerns over fuel prices amid geopolitical tensions.
  • Continued policy support from state governments.

Conclusion

India’s electric vehicle market continued to strengthen during the first half of 2026, with higher registrations recorded across both passenger and commercial vehicle segments. States such as Odisha, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Telangana emerged as key contributors to this growth. As alternative fuel vehicles capture a larger share of new vehicle sales, the data reflects a gradual but steady shift toward cleaner transportation across the country.

Summary

India’s transition toward cleaner mobility continued to gather pace during the first half of 2026, with alternative fuel vehicles accounting for a record share of new vehicle purchases. According to a report by The Economic Times, citing data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), electric vehicles (EVs), hybrids, CNG, and LPG-powered vehicles together represented 40.4% of passenger vehicle sales in June 2026, the highest proportion recorded so far.

Rising fuel price concerns and geopolitical tensions in West Asia have further encouraged consumers to consider vehicles that reduce dependence on conventional fuels.
