Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has reduced its pending litigation count to the lowest level in its history following special resolution drives aimed at faster dispute settlement across consumer courts and industrial tribunals.

The move is part of the organisation’s broader effort to improve grievance redressal and reduce legal backlogs for provident fund members and employers.

Pending Cases Decline Across Forums

EPFO launched mission-mode initiatives to accelerate disposal of cases pending before:

  • Consumer courts
  • Industrial tribunals
  • Other dispute resolution forums

The organisation used its outreach initiative, Nidhi Aapke Nikat, to identify unresolved cases in advance and fast-track settlements.

According to EPFO data:

  • Pending litigation declined to 27,639 cases as of April 1, 2026
  • This compares with 31,036 pending cases a year earlier
  • Total pendency reduced by 3,397 cases

Major Reduction in Decade-Old Cases

The organisation also reported a sharp reduction in long-pending disputes.

Cases pending for over 10 years fell:

  • From 8,539 cases
  • To 4,665 cases

This marks a reduction of nearly 45.4%.

EPFO stated that the latest figures represent the lowest litigation pendency level recorded in its history.

Nationwide Tribunal Disposal Drive

During February and March 2026, EPFO conducted a nationwide special campaign focused on matters pending before Central Government Industrial Tribunals.

The drive primarily targeted disputes related to:

  • Delayed provident fund remittances
  • Employer interest liabilities
  • Cases under the Employees’ Provident Funds and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1952

To improve coordination and speed up case handling, EPFO appointed zone-wise nodal officers to work directly with tribunals and stakeholders.

Hundreds of Appeals Cleared

The campaign resulted in:

  • Disposal of 353 appeals during the drive
  • Ongoing efforts to resolve another 650 pending tribunal matters

The organisation said grievance handling and litigation reduction efforts will continue in the coming months.

Conclusion

Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) ’s latest litigation reduction initiative highlights its increasing focus on:

  • Faster dispute resolution
  • Improved grievance handling
  • Reduced legal backlog
  • Better service delivery for PF members and employers

The decline in pending cases, especially decade-old matters, marks a significant operational improvement for India’s retirement fund body.
