Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has secured a large engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning (EPCC) contract from Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) for a petrochemical project at Bina in Madhya Pradesh. Based on L&T’s internal classification, the contract value falls within the range of ₹5,000 crore to ₹10,000 crore, categorising it as a ‘Major’ project.
The order has been awarded to L&T’s Hydrocarbon Onshore business and will be executed under a lump sum turnkey model. The scope includes complete EPCC activities for a Linear Low-Density Polyethylene and High-Density Polyethylene (LLDPE/HDPE) Swing Unit. The facility will consist of two production trains, each with a capacity of 575 kilo tonnes per annum (KTPA). Upon completion, the unit will rank as the largest LLDPE/HDPE swing facility in India.
Role in BPCL’s Bina Expansion
The project is a key component of BPCL’s Bina Petrochemicals and Refinery Expansion Project. This broader programme aims to establish an integrated petrochemical complex and expand the refinery’s processing capacity from 7.8 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) to approximately 11 MMTPA. The expanded infrastructure is designed to strengthen BPCL’s downstream operations and enhance domestic polymer production capabilities.
Project Details
The Bina facility will be developed as a comprehensive LLDPE/HDPE swing unit incorporating advanced engineering and construction practices. With two high-capacity trains, the project is positioned to set new capacity benchmarks within India’s polyethylene manufacturing sector.
Key Project Parameters
- Project Type: LLDPE/HDPE Swing Unit
- Capacity: Two trains of 575 KTPA each
