Adani Power Limited has expanded its footprint in Madhya Pradesh after receiving an additional Letter of Award (LoA) for 800 megawatts (MW) of power from MP Power Management Company Limited (MPPMCL) under the greenshoe option. This award, announced on September 11, 2025, brings the total capacity granted to Adani Power from MPPMCL to 1,600 MW, following an earlier LoA of 800 MW received on August 29, 2025.
Project Overview
The additional 800 MW capacity will be sourced from a new ultra-supercritical thermal power project located in the Anuppur District of Madhya Pradesh. Both units of the project will be developed under the Design, Build, Finance, Own, and Operate (DBFOO) model, with a fixed tariff of ₹5.838 per kWh. The project will utilise coal linkage provided under the Government of India’s SHAKTI Policy, ensuring reliable and cost-effective fuel supply.
S B Khyalia, Chief Executive of Adani Power, commented, “We are delighted to strengthen our partnership with Madhya Pradesh. This reinforces our commitment to provide reliable, affordable, and sustainable power to the state and its people while supporting India’s energy security and economic growth.”
Strategic Importance and Greenshoe Option
This project marks a first-of-its-kind adoption of the greenshoe option in a thermal power tender in India. The mechanism allows Madhya Pradesh to scale awarded capacities in response to growing electricity demand, which is driven by industrialisation and urbanisation. By utilising this option, the state enhances its energy security while ensuring a steady supply of power to meet residential, commercial, and industrial needs.
Investment and Employment Impact
Adani Power plans to invest approximately ₹21,000 crore for the construction of the plant and related infrastructure. The project is expected to generate direct and indirect employment of 9,000–10,000 people during construction and at least 2,000 jobs once operational. This makes the project a significant contributor to both economic growth and local employment in the region.
Recent Orders and Expansion Trajectory
This award adds to Adani Power’s aggressive expansion across India in 2024–2025:
- September 2024: Letter of interest for 6,600 MW order in Maharashtra (5,000 MW solar + 1,600 MW thermal)
- May 2025: Awarded 1,600 MW from Uttar Pradesh
- August 2025: Awarded 2,400 MW from Bihar
- August 2025: Initially awarded 800 MW from Madhya Pradesh, now scaled to 1,600 MW
These multiple awards highlight Adani Power’s increasing presence in India’s thermal and renewable power sectors, reinforcing its position as one of the country’s leading power producers.
