Government Clears Fresh Semiconductor Investments

India has taken another step in advancing its semiconductor ambitions, with the Union Cabinet approving two new manufacturing projects under the India Semiconductor Mission. These projects, located in Gujarat, are expected to enhance domestic capabilities in critical areas such as chip fabrication, assembly, and display technologies.

The combined investment of nearly ₹3,936 crore highlights the scale of commitment towards strengthening India’s position in the global semiconductor value chain. The initiative also aligns with broader efforts to reduce reliance on imports and build a robust domestic manufacturing base.

Gujarat Emerges as a Semiconductor Hub

The newly approved projects will be established in Dholera and Surat, further positioning Gujarat as a key destination for semiconductor investments. The two facilities together are expected to generate employment for over 2,200 skilled professionals, contributing to both industrial growth and workforce development.

The Dholera project focuses on advanced semiconductor and display manufacturing, while the Surat facility will cater to chip assembly and testing requirements. This combination supports multiple stages of the semiconductor production process within the same region.

Focus on Advanced Display Technologies

Crystal Matrix Limited will set up an integrated semiconductor fabrication and packaging unit in Dholera. The facility will specialise in Mini and Micro-LED display technologies, which are increasingly being adopted in next-generation electronic devices.

In addition to display manufacturing, the unit will provide Gallium Nitride (GaN)-based foundry services. GaN technology is gaining traction due to its efficiency in power electronics and high-performance applications.

The products manufactured at this facility are expected to serve a wide range of industries, including consumer electronics, automotive displays, wearables, and extended reality devices.

Expansion of Chip Assembly Capabilities

Suchi Semicon Private Limited will establish an Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facility in Surat. This unit will focus on producing discrete semiconductor components used across sectors such as automotive, industrial systems, and consumer electronics.

Once operational, the facility is projected to manufacture over one billion semiconductor units annually. This scale of production is expected to significantly contribute to India’s semiconductor supply chain and support growing domestic demand.

Growing Scale of Semiconductor Initiatives

With the addition of these two projects, the total number of semiconductor initiatives approved under the India Semiconductor Mission has reached 12.

Cumulative investment commitments across these projects now stand at approximately ₹1.64 lakh crore, indicating strong momentum in the sector. Several of these projects are already progressing through different stages, with some having commenced commercial operations.

Strengthening Design and Innovation Ecosystem

Beyond manufacturing, India is also focusing on semiconductor design capabilities. Support is being extended to academic institutions, research organisations, and start-ups to build a strong design ecosystem.
