Exploration at the Baloda-Belmundi Diamond Block in Mahasamund district, Chhattisgarh, has resulted in the recovery of five diamonds weighing a total of 1.22 carats, according to officials. The exploration was carried out by NMDC-CMDC Limited, with the recovered samples processed at NMDC’s diamond facility in Panna, Madhya Pradesh.

Two Diamonds Classified as Gem Quality

Among the five recovered diamonds:
2 Gem-quality (Whitish) Diamonds
0.19 carats
0.06 carats
3 Non-Gem Diamonds
Yellowish: 0.32 carats
Brownish: 0.59 carats
Brownish: 0.06 carats
The total weight of all recovered diamonds is 1.22 carats.

Extensive Geological Exploration Conducted

The discovery follows a detailed exploration programme undertaken by NMDC-CMDC Limited, a joint venture between:
National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC)
Chhattisgarh Mineral Development Corporation (CMDC)
Before collecting samples, the exploration team conducted:
Stream sediment surveys
Geophysical investigations
Approximately 500 metres of exploratory drilling
Based on these findings, around 200 tonnes of mineral-bearing material were excavated and transported to NMDC’s diamond processing facility in Panna for detailed examination.

Diamond Mineralisation Confirmed

Officials stated that the recovery confirms the presence of diamond mineralisation within the Baloda-Belmundi block.
The recovered diamonds are currently stored securely at NMDC’s Panna facility while further exploration activities are planned to better understand the area’s geological potential.

Commercial Potential Yet to Be Determined

While the discovery is encouraging, officials clarified that:
The current recovery does not establish commercial viability.
Further drilling and bulk sampling will be required.
Additional geological assessment will determine:
Resource size
Diamond grade
Economic feasibility of mining

Conclusion

The recovery of five diamonds, including two gem-quality stones, marks a positive early outcome for exploration in Chhattisgarh’s Mahasamund district. While the findings confirm the presence of diamond-bearing mineralisation, extensive geological studies and additional drilling will be necessary before determining whether the deposit is commercially viable for mining.
