India’s 5G rollout has reached a major operational milestone, with more than 5 lakh 5G Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) now installed across the country. The update was shared by Minister of Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia in a written response in the Lok Sabha, highlighting accelerated progress in strengthening the nation’s digital backbone.
The Minister noted that the rapid deployment reflects the government’s ongoing focus on improving nationwide mobile connectivity and enabling next-generation technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and cloud-based services. The rollout is part of a broader digital transformation strategy aimed at ensuring high-speed and reliable network access for citizens and enterprises.
Boosting Rural Connectivity through BharatNet
Alongside the growth of 5G infrastructure, the government is pushing parallel initiatives to extend high-speed broadband to rural and remote regions through the BharatNet programme. The project aims to connect Gram Panchayats, border settlements, and underserved areas, ensuring digital access for communities previously lacking structured connectivity.
According to officials, these efforts are central to advancing digital inclusion and bridging the connectivity gap between urban and rural India. Expanded broadband access will support online government services, digital payments, modern agriculture tools, telemedicine, education, and rural entrepreneurship.
