Tata Chemicals has announced plans to expand production of dense soda ash at its Mithapur facility in Gujarat, with the board approving an investment of ₹135 crore at its meeting on November 21, 2025, according to a recent filing.

Expansion Details

  • Current Capacity: 1,091 kilo tonnes per year
  • Additional Capacity: 350 kilo tonnes per year for dense soda ash
  • Current Utilisation: ~90% of existing plant capacity

The expansion will be carried out over the next 24 months, with capacity being added in phases. The investment will be funded through internal accruals and other available sources, though the company has not provided a detailed breakdown.

Rationale Behind the Expansion

Tata Chemicals cited rising demand from sustainability-focused applications as the key driver for this expansion. Dense soda ash finds applications in multiple industries including glass manufacturing, detergents, and sectors linked to sustainable technologies.

Other Approvals from the Board

In the same board meeting, Tata Chemicals also approved a ₹775 crore investment to expand precipitated silica capacity at its Cuddalore plant in Tamil Nadu. This project will add 50 kilo tonnes per year over 27 months, targeting demand from the rubber and automotive tyre industry.
