Honda Motor Co. Ltd. has taken a decisive step into India’s renewable energy sector by acquiring a minority stake in OMC Power, a leading distributed energy company. The collaboration marks Honda’s first clean energy investment in India, focused on repurposing electric vehicle (EV) batteries for renewable energy storage and backup power solutions.
Innovative Battery Reuse Model for Rural and Urban India
Beginning January 2026, Honda and OMC Power will roll out an initiative to reuse Honda’s Mobile Power Pack e: batteries — originally designed for electric motorcycles — as energy storage units for households, small businesses, and schools. These batteries will be integrated into UPS (uninterruptible power supply) systems to provide reliable backup power, particularly in regions with limited grid stability.
Demonstration projects conducted since 2023 in Uttar Pradesh have shown strong performance and stability, confirming the viability of second-life EV batteries as sustainable power sources.
OMC Power’s Expanding Renewable Energy Portfolio
OMC Power is developing a 1 GW renewable energy portfolio spanning four major verticals:
| Vertical | Capacity |
| Rooftop Solar for Healthcare | 600 MWp |
| Green Energy for Telecom | 200 MWp |
| Rural Smart Grids | 100 MWp |
| Solar EPC Projects | 100 MWp |
| Total Portfolio | 1 GW |
This investment will accelerate OMC Power’s mission to expand access to clean, affordable electricity, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas.
Strategic Collaboration and Technology Integration
- Honda’s Indian subsidiary will supply the repurposed EV batteries.
- OMC Power will integrate them with UPS systems and manage deployment.
- Two Honda officials will join OMC Power’s management team to provide technical expertise and oversee implementation.
The collaboration aims to create a circular energy ecosystem, reducing waste from retired EV batteries while enhancing India’s renewable energy storage capabilities.
Sustainability and Broader Impact
By giving EV batteries a second life, the initiative reduces carbon emissions and electronic waste, offering a viable alternative to diesel-based backup generators. The partnership also aligns with India’s Net Zero 2070 goals and global trends in energy circularity and resource efficiency.
Summary:
Honda has invested in OMC Power to repurpose EV batteries into renewable energy storage systems, starting from January 2026. The collaboration supports India’s 1 GW clean energy portfolio, promotes sustainable battery reuse, and provides reliable power to rural and commercial consumers, setting a new benchmark for green energy innovation.
