The Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL), one of India’s leading public sector steelmakers and a Maharatna company, has supplied nearly 15,000 metric tons of steel for the 51-kilometer Bairabi-Sairang railway project in Mizoram, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

High-Grade Steel for the Project

The supply included around 10,000 MT of R-260 Prime rails from SAIL’s Bhilai Steel Plant, a key supplier of rail products to Indian Railways. Additionally, another 5,000 MT of plates, TMT bars, and structural steel were sourced from SAIL’s plants in Bokaro, Rourkela, Bhilai, Durgapur, and Burnpur.

Boosting Northeast Connectivity

The Bairabi-Sairang railway line is a strategic infrastructure project designed to enhance connectivity and economic integration in Mizoram and the Northeast region. SAIL’s contribution ensures the strength, reliability, and durability required for such critical projects.

A Strong Track Record in Nation-Building

Over the years, SAIL has been an integral part of India’s major infrastructure achievements. Its steel has been used in iconic projects like the Chenab Railway Bridge, Jiribam–Tupul–Imphal Broad Gauge Project, Atal Tunnel, Bandra–Worli Sea Link, Dhola-Sadiya Bridge, and Bogibeel Bridge. The addition of the Bairabi-Sairang railway project further strengthens this legacy of nation-building.

Summary

SAIL has supplied 15,000 MT of high-grade steel, including 10,000 MT of R-260 rails, for Mizoram’s newly inaugurated Bairabi-Sairang railway line. The project, a key step in boosting Northeast connectivity, adds to SAIL’s long list of contributions to India’s landmark infrastructure developments.
