Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (BALCO), a subsidiary of Vedanta Aluminium, has successfully produced its first metal from India’s largest 525 kilo Ampere (kA) smelter, marking a significant milestone in the company’s one million tonne per annum expansion project.
Technological Advancement in Smelting
The new 525 kA smelter exceeds the previous national benchmark of 378 kA, offering enhanced scale, efficiency, and operational precision. Integrated with advanced automation and engineering systems, the smelter reflects BALCO’s commitment to modernising aluminium production and strengthening India’s industrial capabilities.
Capacity Expansion and Strategic Impact
With the commissioning of the 0.435 million tonne per annum potline, BALCO’s total aluminium production will reach one million tonnes annually, joining the global “Million Tonne Club.” This ramp-up is expected to contribute over 20% of India’s total aluminium output, supporting key industries such as defence, aerospace, automotive, construction, and power transmission.
The project also aligns with the Make in India initiative, boosting domestic aluminium supply, reducing import dependency, and enhancing availability for strategic sectors.
Global Partnerships Drive Success
BALCO achieved this milestone in collaboration with global and domestic engineering partners, including Larsen & Toubro, Asea Brown Boveri, Siemens, and Guiyang Aluminium Magnesium Design & Research Institute. Their expertise in automation, engineering, and efficiency systems was instrumental in the smelter’s successful commissioning.
