Transformers and Rectifiers (India) Limited (TARIL) has bagged a major order valued at ₹53.33 crore from Power Grid Corporation of India Limited, marking an important milestone for the company and the domestic power equipment industry.
With this contract, TARIL becomes the first private Indian firm to secure an order for HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) Converter Transformers, a domain historically dominated by global technology companies and public sector entities.
Project Scope and Execution Timeline
Under the order, TARIL will undertake the repair, installation, testing, and commissioning of a 397 MVA HVDC Converter Transformer. The assignment is domestic in nature and is expected to be completed in the next financial year.
The company confirmed that the transaction is compliant with regulatory norms and does not involve any related-party dealings.
This breakthrough positions TARIL among a select group of global manufacturers supplying HVDC technology—one of the most advanced forms of power transmission infrastructure.
Significance for India’s Power Sector
The contract aligns closely with the government’s push toward domestic manufacturing through the Make in India initiative. The availability of an indigenous HVDC transformer supplier is expected to strengthen India’s strategic capability in advanced transmission systems, reduce import dependency, and enhance cost efficiency.
Industry Outlook: Demand for HVDC Systems Rising
India’s HVDC market is expanding rapidly, driven by large-scale renewable energy integration and national grid upgrades. Key growth catalysts include:
