Solar Defence and Aerospace Limited has announced plans to invest ₹12,800 crore in advanced technology sectors including robotics, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and deep-tech manufacturing, according to reports. The move is expected to strengthen India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem while also supporting technological innovation in civilian industries.
Focus on Robotics, UAVs and Missile Systems
On March 7, 2026, the company revealed its strategy to expand production capabilities for robots, drones and long-range missile systems. As part of the initiative, Solar Defence aims to manufacture 10,000 drones and 1,000 robots every year, catering to both defence and commercial applications.
The investment will be implemented over a three-to-four-year period under the Maharashtra government’s Mega Project and Thrust policy. The company expects to unveil the first prototype of its robotic system within the next year.
AI-Driven Industry 5.0 Manufacturing Hub
Solar Defence plans to transform its Nagpur facility into what it describes as India’s first AI-powered Industry 5.0 manufacturing ecosystem.
The facility is expected to combine advanced robotics, artificial intelligence and intelligent automation to create a manufacturing environment that emphasises human-centric production, sustainability, and responsible technological integration.
Development of Advanced AI-Enabled UAVs
A major portion of the investment will go toward the development of next-generation UAVs, including Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) drones.
These advanced drones are expected to support surveillance, reconnaissance, and strategic defence operations, further strengthening India’s domestic defence technology capabilities.
Strengthening India’s Defence Manufacturing Landscape
Company officials stated that the expansion into deep-tech innovation will broaden the scope of India’s defence manufacturing sector and open up new opportunities across industrial, defence, and civilian applications.
The initiative reflects a broader shift within the sector toward high-technology manufacturing and advanced automation, positioning India to enhance its capabilities in emerging defence technologies.
Summary:
Solar Defence and Aerospace Limited plans to invest ₹12,800 crore in robotics, drones, and deep-tech manufacturing over the next three to four years. The company aims to produce 10,000 drones and 1,000 robots annually, while developing advanced AI-powered UAVs including MALE drones. The project, supported by Maharashtra’s Mega Project policy, will also establish an AI-driven Industry 5.0 manufacturing ecosystem in Nagpur, strengthening India’s defence and high-technology manufacturing capabilities.
