Rain Industries Limited, through its wholly owned subsidiary Rain Carbon Canada Inc. (RAINCA), has obtained C$860,000 (approximately €530,000) in funding for a two-year research and development project focused on creating eco-friendly battery anode materials.

The initiative, undertaken in collaboration with Northern Graphite Corporation, seeks to convert graphite by-products into high-performance, battery-grade anode materials (BAM). The total project cost is estimated at C$2.2 million and is supported by the Canada-Germany Collaborative Industrial Research and Development Program.

Project Highlights

Aspect Details
Funding Received C$860,000 (€530,000)
Total Project Cost C$2.2 million
Duration 24 months
Objective Convert low-value graphite by-products into high-quality battery anode materials
Supporting Agencies National Research Council of Canada Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC IRAP) and Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWK)

Collaboration and Technical Contributions

Under the partnership, Northern Graphite will supply natural graphite feedstock from its facilities in Canada and Namibia, applying advanced sizing, shaping, and purification techniques.

Rain Industries, through RAINCA, will lead the conversion process using its proprietary LIONCOAT® carbon coating technology and oversee electrochemical performance testing to ensure the development of efficient and sustainable anode materials.

Environmental and Economic Benefits

The project supports circular economy principles, aiming to:

  • Reduce waste by upcycling graphite by-products.
  • Minimize mining dependency through reuse of existing materials.
  • Lower carbon emissions associated with battery material production.
  • Enhance yield in milling and shaping operations.

Strategic Importance

This initiative strengthens Rain Industries’ position in the advanced materials segment and aligns with global sustainability goals. It is expected to accelerate product development, shorten time-to-market cycles, and expand the company’s technical expertise in processing battery-grade carbon precursors for next-generation energy storage applications.

Summary:
Rain Industries’ subsidiary, Rain Carbon Canada Inc., has secured C$860,000 funding for a C$2.2 million, two-year project in collaboration with Northern Graphite Corporation to develop eco-friendly battery anode materials. Supported by Canadian and German government agencies, the initiative aims to convert graphite by-products into high-performance materials while reducing waste and carbon emissions, reinforcing the company’s commitment to sustainability and innovation.
