Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (POWERGRID) has expanded its transmission network through the acquisition of SR WR Power Transmission Limited (SRWRPTL) for approximately ₹11.29 crore. The strategic acquisition, completed on October 17, 2025, is aimed at boosting inter-regional power transmission capacity between the Southern and Western grids of India, enhancing reliability and grid efficiency.
Acquisition Overview
POWERGRID acquired 100% equity stake in SRWRPTL — comprising 50,000 shares at ₹10 per share — through a tariff-based competitive bidding process. The acquisition includes all associated assets and liabilities of SRWRPTL as of the transaction date. The final acquisition cost may be subject to revision after the company’s audited financials are finalised.
Project Scope and Infrastructure
SRWRPTL will develop 765 kV double circuit transmission lines connecting Karnataka and Maharashtra, operating under the Build, Own, Operate, and Transfer (BOOT) model. The project also involves the installation of line bays at both ends of the network to ensure seamless grid connectivity.
The initiative aims to strengthen the inter-regional transmission corridor, enabling smoother power flow between southern and western states, and supporting India’s broader vision of a unified, resilient national power grid.
Regulatory Requirements Pending
Although SRWRPTL was incorporated on July 1, 2025, it still requires key regulatory approvals before operations begin, including:
- A transmission license from the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC).
- Adoption of transmission charges by CERC.
These clearances are essential for SRWRPTL to commence commercial operations under POWERGRID’s ownership.
Strategic Importance and Future Outlook
The acquisition aligns with POWERGRID’s strategy of expanding its core transmission business through competitive bidding and project acquisitions. By integrating SRWRPTL, the company strengthens its operational presence in southern and western India — regions witnessing rising electricity demand driven by industrial growth and renewable energy integration.
As the project transitions to the operational phase, it presents a significant growth opportunity for POWERGRID. Enhanced grid connectivity will not only support reliable power supply but also improve energy transfer efficiency across regions, contributing to India’s sustainable energy infrastructure goals.
Summary:
POWERGRID’s ₹11.29 crore acquisition of SRWRPTL marks a strategic step toward expanding inter-regional transmission capacity between the Southern and Western grids. Once operational, the 765 kV double circuit line will bolster grid stability, improve power reliability, and reinforce POWERGRID’s leadership in India’s evolving power transmission sector.
