The Government of India’s rooftop solar programme, PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, has recorded installations across 23,96,497 households as of FY 2025–26. This represents 23.96% progress toward the mission target of installing rooftop solar systems in one crore households by FY 2026–27.

The scheme operates as a demand-driven initiative focused on increasing the adoption of residential solar power across the country.

Application and Adoption Data

As of December 3, 2025, the National Portal recorded:

  • 53,54,099 total applications
  • 19,17,698 rooftop solar installations completed
  • Installations now span nearly 24 lakh households

Key Implementation Measures

To support faster adoption, the government has introduced multiple operational and regulatory reforms:

Digital Process Simplification

  • Entire process—application, approval, installation, and subsidy disbursal—is online via the National Portal.

Financial Support

  • Collateral-free loans are available from nationalised banks.
  • Loan interest rate is based on repo rate + 50 basis points, currently 6% per annum.
  • Loan tenure is 10 years.

Regulatory Changes

  • Removal of technical feasibility requirement.
  • Automatic load enhancement allowed up to 10 kW.
  • Integration of net metering agreements into the portal workflow.

Deployment Models Enabled

  • RESCO model
  • Utility-led aggregation model

Vendor and Workforce Expansion

  • Simplified vendor registration process.
  • Capacity-building programs for creating skilled personnel.

Awareness Campaigns

  • Outreach conducted through television, radio, print media, and regional communication channels.

Monitoring and Support Mechanisms

Progress monitoring is performed through:

  • Regular reviews with state authorities and DISCOMs.
  • Regional-level implementation assessments.

A grievance redressal system has been established, including a multilingual call center accessible at 15555, covering 12 Indian languages.

The PM Surya Ghar programme continues to expand, with installations and applications increasing alongside procedural and infrastructure enhancements.
