In a significant move for India’s energy sector, NTPC and Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) will jointly invest around ₹42,000 crore to develop the 2,800 MW Mahi Banswara Rajasthan Atomic Power Project (MBRAPP). The project, one of the largest nuclear power plants in the country, aims to supply reliable base-load electricity and strengthen India’s position in nuclear energy generation.

The project was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, alongside other energy initiatives in Rajasthan with a combined investment exceeding ₹51,000 crore. The MBRAPP will be developed by the joint venture Anushakti Vidhyut Nigam Ltd (ASHVINI), where NPCIL holds 51% and NTPC 49%. Both partners will pool financial, technological, and project expertise to execute the 4×700 MW nuclear power project.

Strategic Significance

This marks NTPC’s entry into nuclear power, expanding its portfolio beyond thermal and renewable energy. The plant is expected to supply clean, affordable, and reliable power to Rajasthan and other regions while creating direct and indirect employment opportunities and supporting local industries and communities.

Renewable Energy Boost in Rajasthan

Alongside the nuclear project, Prime Minister Modi also inaugurated the RSDCL Nokh Solar Park (925 MW) at Phalodi, with NTPC developing 735 MW. Additionally, Avaada Group laid the foundation stone for its 1,560 MWp solar plus 2,500 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project at Pugal and a 200 MW (282 MWp) solar project at Dungargarh.

These renewable projects represent a combined investment of over ₹9,200 crore and are expected to generate more than 1,600 green jobs in Rajasthan. They will also contribute to environmental conservation, reducing over 20 lakh tonnes of CO2 emissions annually and saving approximately 600 lakh litres of water per year through robotic cleaning systems.

Vineet Mittal, Chairman of Avaada Group, said, “We are committed to empowering communities, creating livelihoods, and shaping a sustainable, self-reliant nation.
