NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOCPA) to advance green energy technologies and promote decarbonisation in port operations.

Under this agreement, NGEL will establish a green hydrogen fuelling station at VOC Port, complemented by the deployment of hydrogen-powered internal combustion engine trucks. The initiative aims to gradually phase out fossil-fuel-powered trucks, promoting cleaner fuels and enhancing energy security in port logistics.

NTPC’s Green Energy Initiatives

NGEL brings experience in hydrogen and clean mobility solutions:

  • Surat, Gujarat: Successfully operating a green hydrogen blending project for over two years.
  • Other Mobility Initiatives: Implemented projects in Leh (Ladakh), Greater Noida (Uttar Pradesh), Bhubaneswar (Odisha), and Kandla Port (Gujarat), demonstrating a nationwide commitment to decarbonisation.

Established on 7 April 2022, NGEL is a fully owned subsidiary of NTPC and serves as its renewable energy arm, managing all operational and under-construction renewable projects transferred from the parent company.

Strategic Significance

The VOC Port project is a key step in phasing out conventional fossil fuels in favor of green hydrogen, aligning with India’s broader sustainability and carbon reduction targets. The use of hydrogen-powered trucks will not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions but also serve as a scalable model for port operations and industrial logistics across the country.

Financial Highlights

NTPC Green Energy’s Q1 FY26 performance demonstrates strong growth:

  • Net Profit: Jumped 59.1% to ₹220.48 crore.
  • Net Sales: Increased 17.6% to ₹680.21 crore compared to Q1 FY25.

These results reflect NGEL’s successful operational and financial execution in renewable energy projects, reinforcing its capacity to undertake ambitious decarbonisation initiatives like the VOC Port hydrogen project.

Summary

NTPC Green Energy has partnered with VOC Port to set up a green hydrogen fuelling station and introduce hydrogen-powered trucks, marking a significant step toward decarbonising port operations. Leveraging its prior hydrogen mobility projects and strong Q1 FY26 performance, NGEL is strategically positioned to scale clean energy solutions across industrial and logistics sectors, supporting India’s green energy and sustainability objectives.
