NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL), a wholly owned subsidiary of NTPC Ltd, has entered into a strategic partnership with Japan’s ENEOS Corporation to explore joint opportunities in green hydrogen and its derivatives, including green methanol.

The two companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during the ongoing World Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan, marking a major step forward in India’s ambition to emerge as a global hub for clean fuels. The collaboration will focus on developing a framework for the supply of green methanol and hydrogen-based products from India to Japan.

Partnership to Leverage Pudimadaka Green Hydrogen Hub

The partnership will centre around NGEL’s upcoming Green Hydrogen Hub at Pudimadaka, Andhra Pradesh — one of India’s largest integrated clean fuel facilities.

Spread across over 1,200 acres, the Pudimadaka project is being designed to produce green hydrogen and convert it into derivative fuels such as green ammonia and green methanol for both domestic use and export.

This collaboration aims to tap into Japan’s growing demand for low-carbon fuels while positioning India as a key exporter in the global green energy supply chain.

Advancing India’s Renewable and Hydrogen Goals

NGEL stated that the partnership aligns with NTPC’s target of achieving 60 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032 and supports the objectives of India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission.

By combining ENEOS’s expertise in energy trading and hydrogen technologies with NGEL’s expanding renewable infrastructure, the partnership is expected to accelerate the development of sustainable energy corridors between India and Japan.

Strengthening India–Japan Clean Energy Cooperation

The MoU marks another milestone in the growing energy collaboration between India and Japan, particularly in the areas of clean hydrogen and ammonia trade.

For Japan — which aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 — partnering with India offers access to a reliable source of green fuels. For NTPC Green Energy, it signals its transformation from a domestic renewable power producer into a global exporter of green hydrogen-based products, reinforcing India’s leadership in the global energy transition.

Summary

NTPC Green Energy has signed an MoU with Japan’s ENEOS to jointly develop green methanol and hydrogen products, leveraging the upcoming Pudimadaka Green Hydrogen Hub in Andhra Pradesh. The agreement supports NTPC’s 60 GW renewable energy target by 2032 and strengthens India–Japan clean energy ties as both nations push toward carbon neutrality.
