Within just three months of implementing the mandatory Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) for silver, over 17 lakh silver articles have been hallmarked, reflecting strong adoption among jewellers and consumers. While the Silver Hallmarking Scheme remains voluntary, HUID marking is now compulsory for all hallmarked silver articles.

Over 17 Lakh Articles Hallmarked in Three Months

Since the launch of the silver HUID portal, more than 17 lakh silver jewellery items have been registered and hallmarked. Purity grades 925 and 800 together account for nearly 90% of all hallmarked items. The introduction of HUID has significantly accelerated hallmarking activity. For context, around 32 lakh silver articles were hallmarked in FY 2024–25, highlighting the confidence of both consumers and jewellers in the HUID system.

Regional and Product Trends

Analysis of hallmarking trends indicates that the Southern region leads in the volume of hallmarked silver, followed by the Western and Eastern regions. Among product categories, payal/anklets represent the largest share, predominantly in 800 purity grade, while silver diyas follow, typically hallmarked in both 800 and 925 grades.

Shri Pralhad Joshi, Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, highlighted on Twitter:
“HUID in silver jewellery hallmarking marks a significant step forward in strengthening purity assurance and eliminating fake hallmarking practices. With HUID now mandatory on voluntarily BIS-hallmarked silver articles, each piece carries a unique 6-digit identification code enabling complete digital traceability and enhanced consumer protection. With over 17.35 lakh articles already hallmarked under the HUID system, this initiative is driving greater transparency, accountability, and confidence among consumers and stakeholders.”
