Knowledge Marine & Engineering Works Ltd. (KMEW) has received a Letter of Intent (LOI) worth ₹385.76 crore from the V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOCPA) for the hiring of a 60-ton electric green tug under the Green Tug Transition Program (GTTP). The 15-year contract underscores India’s push toward decarbonising its maritime sector.

Strategic and Environmental Significance
The project is part of the Green Tug Transition Program (GTTP)—a national initiative under Maritime India Vision 2030 that aims to deploy zero-emission tugs at all major Indian ports by 2027 and reduce carbon emissions by 30% per ton of cargo handled.
This marks KMEW’s largest order to date and strengthens its presence in southern India following its earlier conventional tug contract with VOCPA. The company plans to design and build the tug in-house, showcasing its technical and cost-efficiency capabilities.
CEO Sujay Kewalramani hailed the win as a defining moment for both KMEW and India’s green maritime efforts, emphasizing that the project supports the country’s Paris Agreement climate goals.
