Indian Railways has delivered a robust operational performance in FY 2025–26, achieving significant milestones across both passenger and freight segments. The national transporter recorded higher volumes, improved revenues, and continued efficiency gains, reflecting its expanding role in India’s transportation and logistics ecosystem.
Passenger Traffic Sees Steady Expansion
During the fiscal year, Indian Railways carried approximately 741 crore passengers, registering a 3.54% increase compared to 716 crore passengers in FY 2024–25. The growth in ridership was accompanied by a rise in passenger revenues, which reached nearly ₹80,000 crore, marking a 5.96% increase from ₹75,500 crore in the previous year.
This upward trend indicates sustained demand for rail travel, supported by network enhancements, better service delivery, and increased reliance on rail as an affordable and efficient mode of transport.
Freight Operations Reach New Highs
The freight segment also recorded strong growth, with total cargo movement touching a record 1,670 million tonnes (MT) in FY26, reflecting a 3.25% year-on-year increase. Additionally, the number of wagons handled rose by 4.56%, increasing from 2.79 crore to 2.92 crore.
The consistent expansion in freight volumes underscores the growing preference for railways as a reliable and cost-effective logistics solution, particularly for bulk commodities.
Freight Revenue and Commodity Contribution
Freight earnings remained resilient, reaching approximately ₹1,77,754 crore in FY26, compared to ₹1,75,302 crore in FY25, representing a 1.44% growth.
Among the key contributors:
- Iron ore led the revenue chart with ₹14,600.51 crore
- Cement contributed ₹13,599 crore
- Pig iron and finished steel generated ₹12,181 crore
- Fertilisers added ₹9,039 crore
- Food grains accounted for ₹8,312.5 crore
- Mineral oil contributed ₹7,249.54 crore
These figures highlight the critical role of Indian Railways in supporting core industries and facilitating large-scale commodity movement across the country.
Operational Momentum Continues
The overall performance reflects Indian Railways’ ongoing efforts to enhance capacity, improve operational efficiency, and strengthen its infrastructure. With continued investments and modernization initiatives, the organisation is well-positioned to sustain growth across both passenger and freight segments.
Summary
Indian Railways recorded a strong FY26 performance, with passenger traffic rising to 741 crore and revenue nearing ₹80,000 crore. Freight movement reached a record 1,670 MT, supported by steady growth in wagon handling and demand from core sectors. Freight earnings also saw a modest increase, driven by key commodities such as iron ore, cement, and steel. The results highlight the Railways’ expanding role in India’s transport and logistics landscape.
