The Indian Army has signed a contract to procure its first set of indigenously developed Software Defined Radios (SDRs), marking a major milestone in India’s defence indigenisation efforts. The SDR systems were designed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and will be manufactured by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL).

System Features

The newly developed SDRs support high data transfer rates and are equipped with Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET) capabilities, enabling communication even in the absence of fixed infrastructure. The systems are designed to provide secure voice and data transmission across varied terrains and operational conditions.

Development and Production

The SDR technology was developed by DRDO to meet the Indian Army’s operational communication requirements, with BEL serving as the production partner. The project falls under the Indigenously Designed, Developed, and Manufactured (IDDM) category, reflecting the defence sector’s focus on self-reliance and local innovation.

Operational Role

Deployment of the radios will be carried out in phases across Army formations. The SDRs are set to replace legacy communication systems, allowing troops to connect through secure, real-time networks that operate independently in field environments.
