India has added significant capacity in the bioenergy segment over the past decade, with the installation of 2,361 MW of biomass-based power projects and 228 MWe of waste-to-energy facilities. In addition, around 2.88 lakh biogas plants have been set up nationwide to support the adoption of sustainable energy alternatives.
Policy Support and Funding Framework
The growth of the bioenergy sector has been aided by continued support under the National Bioenergy Programme (NBP) Phase-I. The programme was notified with an allocated budget of ₹998 crore for the period from 2022–23 to 2025–26. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has further supported sectoral development by extending Central Financial Assistance across various schemes aimed at biomass power, bio-CNG, biogas, and waste-to-energy projects.
Government Initiatives and State-Level Progress
Government measures have focused on providing financial incentives for electricity generation from biogas and agro-industrial waste, promoting the establishment of bio-CNG plants, and offering subsidies for biomass-based cogeneration facilities. These interventions have contributed to faster renewable energy capacity additions, particularly in states such as Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Punjab, which have emerged as leading contributors to the sector’s expansion.
Summary:
Over the last ten years, India has commissioned 2,361 MW of biomass power capacity, 228 MWe of waste-to-energy projects, and approximately 2.88 lakh biogas plants. Supported by targeted government programmes and financial assistance, the bioenergy sector has seen steady growth, with several states playing a prominent role in its development.
