India has achieved a significant milestone in renewable energy, adding 31.25 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity in FY 2025-26, with 24.28 GW coming from solar energy. This marks the country’s largest-ever annual expansion in non-fossil energy.

National Renewable Energy Growth

Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Shri Pralhad Joshi, highlighted the achievement at the Global Energy Leaders’ Summit 2025 in Puri, Odisha. He noted that India contributed 46 GW to global solar capacity between FY 2022 and 2024, making it the third-largest solar contributor worldwide.

Over the past 11 years, India’s solar capacity has grown from 2.8 GW to 130 GW, reflecting a surge of over 4,500%. This expansion underscores India’s increasing role in the global clean energy sector while continuing to utilize coal resources domestically.

Odisha Rooftop Solar Initiative

Under the PM Surya Ghar Utility-Led Aggregation (ULA) model, Odisha will deploy 1.5 lakh rooftop solar units, each with a 1 kW capacity. The initiative aims to benefit 7–8 lakh citizens, particularly from economically weaker households.

The state currently has 3.1 GW of installed renewable capacity, accounting for over 34% of its total power capacity. Under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana so far:

  • 1.6 lakh households have applied for rooftop solar
  • 23,000 installations have been completed
  • 19,200 beneficiaries have received subsidies totaling over ₹147 crore directly in their bank accounts

The program is part of India’s broader effort to expand clean energy access and accelerate rooftop solar adoption across the country.
