The Government of India has approved 25 lakh additional LPG connections under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) for the financial year 2025–26, aiming to further expand access to clean cooking fuel across the country.
Launched in May 2016, PMUY provides deposit-free LPG connections to adult women from economically disadvantaged households. As of 1 November 2025, the scheme has enabled over 10.33 crore LPG connections nationwide, significantly improving access to cleaner energy solutions.
Targeted Subsidy for Affordability
To encourage sustained LPG usage among beneficiaries, the government offers a targeted subsidy:
- Current subsidy: ₹300 per 14.2 kg cylinder (applicable to up to 9 refills per year)
- Proportionate subsidy available for 5 kg cylinders
- Earlier subsidy: ₹200 per cylinder (introduced in May 2022)
Usage and consumption are closely monitored via MIS reports, PPAC data, and Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs). Independent studies indicate PMUY has had a transformative impact on rural households, especially for women.
