
New Delhi, August 29, 2025 – Credit card spending in India rose 6% month-on-month to ₹1.94 lakh crore in July 2025, up from ₹1.83 lakh crore in June, according to data released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). On a year-on-year basis, spending increased 12% from ₹1.72 lakh crore in July 2024, highlighting strong momentum in digital payments and consumer spending.
Transaction Breakdown
- Point-of-sale (POS) transactions accounted for ₹70,380 crore, registering a 4.3% increase from June.
- Online and other credit card payments grew 6.7% to ₹1,23,469 crore during the same period.
Credit and Debit Card Usage
India’s credit card base continued to expand, reaching 11.16 crore cards in circulation in July 2025 after the addition of 4.26 lakh new cards during the month. This compares with 10.45 crore cards in July 2024 and 10.98 crore in March 2025.
Debit card usage also witnessed growth, with 101 crore debit cards in circulation in July 2025, compared to 96.32 crore a year earlier.
Payment Infrastructure Expansion
RBI data further revealed an expansion in digital and banking infrastructure:
- QR codes issued rose to 68.81 crore in July, up from 67.83 crore in June.
- Micro ATMs increased marginally to 1.47 crore, compared to 1.46 crore a month earlier.
International Transactions
Cross-border activity showed mixed trends:
- International credit card spending dropped 9.5% to ₹7,467 crore in July, from ₹8,251 crore in June.
- International debit card spending edged up to ₹2,247 crore from ₹2,182 crore in the previous month.
