BEML Limited has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), and Umeandus Technologies India Pvt. Ltd. (UTIPL) for the development of a Real-Time Automatic Cargo Evacuation System, also referred to as the Enhanced Freight Transport System (e-FTS).
Project Scope
The pilot project will be implemented at Kandla Port in Gujarat. It aims to establish an automated system to transport cargo directly between ships and the shore in real time. The e-FTS will be capable of handling both bulk and container cargo, thereby improving port operational efficiency and reducing manual handling.
Participants and Roles
| Organisation | Role |
| Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) | Client |
| Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) | Lead Member |
| BEML Limited | Execution Partner |
| Umeandus Technologies India Pvt. Ltd. (UTIPL) | Execution Partner |
The detailed responsibilities of each participant will be defined in a definitive agreement. Once operational, DMRC will manage the system’s operations and maintenance for a period of 25 years.
Technical Aspects
The e-FTS system will employ automated cargo loading and unloading processes, enabling efficient transfer without reliance on traditional port infrastructure or berth depth. The system is designed for application in both existing and new port projects and aims to reduce the need for dredging by allowing cargo transfer in deeper waters.
Industry Collaboration
The partnership brings together DMRC’s infrastructure expertise, BEML’s engineering and equipment capabilities, and UTIPL’s technological framework. The pilot project is expected to serve as a model that can be replicated across other Indian ports in the future.
