Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman recently reviewed the ongoing work at Tata Electronics’ Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facility in Jagiroad, Assam, marking a major step toward integrating the state into the global semiconductor supply chain.
The visit highlights the Centre’s focus on positioning Assam as a major industrial and technology hub in the northeastern region.
Tata’s ₹27,000 Crore OSAT Facility to Boost Assam’s Industrial Landscape
The Tata OSAT centre, coming up in Morigaon district, involves an investment of ₹27,000 crore and is designed to manufacture up to 48 million semiconductor chips per day using advanced packaging technologies.
The facility is targeted for commissioning by April 2026 and is expected to play a crucial role in India’s semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem.
According to Randhir Thakur, CEO of Tata Electronics, the plant is progressing as planned and will create approximately 15,000 direct jobs and an additional 11,000–13,000 indirect employment opportunities, significantly contributing to the region’s economic growth and industrial development.
Part of India’s Broader Semiconductor Mission
The Assam OSAT project is a key component of the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), launched in 2021 to establish a robust, self-reliant semiconductor ecosystem in the country.
Since the launch of ISM, ten semiconductor projects worth over ₹1.60 lakh crore have been approved across six states — Gujarat, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh.
Earlier in 2025, CG-Semi’s pilot OSAT facility in Sanand, Gujarat, achieved a major milestone by producing India’s first fully indigenous semiconductor chip, signaling strong progress in the nation’s chipmaking capabilities.
Next Phase: Semicon 2.0 Initiative
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) is advancing Semicon 2.0, the next phase of India’s semiconductor roadmap, aimed at scaling up fabrication, packaging, and design capabilities across the country.
With the Tata OSAT centre nearing completion, Assam is poised to become a significant player in the global semiconductor network by 2026, strengthening both regional and national manufacturing ecosystems.
