New Delhi, August 29, 2025 — Adani Power Limited (APL), India’s largest private-sector thermal power producer, has won a $3 billion project in Bihar to supply 2,400 MW of electricity over the next 25 years. The company has received a Letter of Award (LoA) from Bihar State Power Generation Company Ltd (BSPGCL) for this large-scale initiative.
The upcoming ultra-supercritical thermal power plant, comprising three units of 800 MW each, will be set up at Pirpainti in Bhagalpur district, Bihar. The award has been granted on behalf of North Bihar Power Distribution Company Ltd (NBPDCL) and South Bihar Power Distribution Company Ltd (SBPDCL). The next step will be the signing of a Power Supply Agreement (PSA) between the parties.
Investment and Job Creation
The project involves an estimated investment of $3 billion, including both the plant and supporting infrastructure. Beyond strengthening Bihar’s power supply, it is expected to create:
- 10,000–12,000 direct and indirect jobs during the construction phase
- Around 3,000 jobs during its operational phase
This dual benefit of economic growth and employment generation is expected to have a long-term impact on the region’s development.
Addressing India’s Growing Power Needs
India’s electricity demand is projected to grow significantly in the coming decades:
- Peak demand to rise from ~250 GW today to 400 GW by FY2031-32
- Demand likely to exceed 700 GW by 2047
Recognizing this need, the government has planned an additional 100 GW of thermal capacity by 2035. Thermal power will continue to play a key role by offering base-load reliability and grid balancing support alongside renewable energy expansion.
Competitive Bidding Success
Adani Power secured the project through a Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) process conducted by BSPGCL, where it quoted the lowest supply tariff of ₹6.075 per KWh.
Leadership Speak
Mr. S.B. Khyalia, CEO of Adani Power, said:
“With our upcoming ultra-supercritical, high-efficiency Pirpainti project in Bihar, we are setting new benchmarks in operational excellence and sustainability. This plant will provide affordable and uninterrupted power to the people of Bihar, catalyzing industrialization, strengthening the state’s economy, and supporting the prosperity of its people.”
Outlook
The Pirpainti project marks a major milestone in Adani Power’s growth strategy and underscores its role in ensuring India’s long-term energy security. By combining efficiency, scale, and sustainability, the company aims to meet rising demand while driving regional economic development.
