The original deadline for compliance, set for end-February 2026 with a subsequent reporting window, has now been deferred to December 2026. The extension follows multiple representations from industry stakeholders highlighting operational and technological challenges in implementing the directive.

Earlier, authorities had already provided interim flexibility until March-end, but the latest revision reflects ongoing discussions between the government and ecosystem participants. Companies were formally informed of the extension starting March 30, 2026.

The directive applies to major messaging platforms such as WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal, along with a broader ecosystem that includes handset manufacturers and operating system providers like Google and Apple.
