The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched the LVM3-M6 mission on December 24, deploying the BlueBird Block-2 communication satellite of US-based AST SpaceMobile. The launch marks a significant milestone for India’s commercial space programme.

The LVM3 launch vehicle lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC), Sriharikota, at 8:55 am, carrying the satellite under a commercial arrangement between NewSpace India Limited (NSIL)—ISRO’s commercial arm—and AST SpaceMobile.

Heaviest Payload Placed in LEO by LVM3

With a mass of approximately 6,100 kg, BlueBird Block-2 is the heaviest payload ever deployed into Low Earth Orbit (LEO) by the LVM3 rocket. This surpasses the previous LVM3 record of about 4,400 kg, achieved during the LVM3-M5/CMS-03 mission in November.

ISRO confirmed that the satellite was scheduled to be injected into LEO around 15 minutes after liftoff.

About the BlueBird Block-2 Satellite

BlueBird Block-2 is part of AST SpaceMobile’s next-generation satellite constellation designed to deliver space-based cellular broadband connectivity directly to standard smartphones.

Key features of the satellite include:

  • A 223 square metre phased-array antenna, the largest commercial communications antenna deployed in LEO
  • Operational altitude of around 600 km
  • Capability to support 4G and 5G services, including voice, video, messaging and data

The constellation aims to extend mobile connectivity to remote and underserved regions. AST SpaceMobile had earlier launched five BlueBird satellites in September 2024, providing initial coverage in parts of the United States and select global regions.

LVM3 Launch Vehicle

The LVM3, also known as India’s human-rated launcher for the Gaganyaan programme, stands 43.5 metres tall. It is a three-stage vehicle comprising:

  • Two S200 solid strap-on boosters
  • A liquid core stage
  • A cryogenic upper stage

The rocket has previously supported major missions including Chandrayaan-2, Chandrayaan-3, and multiple OneWeb satellite launches.

Ahead of the mission, ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan offered prayers at the Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple in Tirumala on December 23.

Summary

ISRO successfully launched the LVM3-M6 mission carrying AST SpaceMobile’s BlueBird Block-2 satellite, the heaviest payload ever placed in Low Earth Orbit by the LVM3 rocket. Weighing about 6,100 kg, the satellite is part of a constellation designed to provide direct 4G and 5G connectivity to smartphones, strengthening India’s role in high-capacity commercial space launches.
