Investment to Boost Shipyard Capacity, Skill Development, and Maritime Innovation
Swan Defence and Heavy Industries (SDHI) has inked a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) for a strategic investment of Rs 4,250 crore. This collaboration is poised to modernize India’s maritime infrastructure, create a skilled workforce, and build a stronger ecosystem to support the nation’s shipbuilding ambitions.
Transforming Pipavav Shipyard into a Global Hub
The investment will primarily benefit Pipavav Port in Gujarat, home to India’s largest dry dock capable of constructing vessels of up to 400,000 DWT. Of the total investment, Rs 3,500 crore will be allocated toward capacity expansion. This includes the development of slipways, jetties, block fabrication facilities, dredging activities, and installation of additional cranes. These upgrades are expected to significantly scale up production, enabling the shipyard to cater to both domestic and international demand.
World-Class Centre of Excellence for Maritime Talent
SDHI will also establish a Centre of Excellence (CoE) at the shipyard with an investment of Rs 200 crore. Designed to train and certify over 1,000 youth annually, the CoE will be equipped with smart classrooms, simulation labs, advanced design software, and shipbuilding simulators. The initiative aims to bridge the talent gap in India’s maritime sector, ensuring a steady supply of industry-ready professionals.
Development of a Maritime Cluster
In addition, SDHI plans to set up a 200-acre Maritime Cluster within the shipyard at an investment of Rs 550 crore. The cluster will act as a hub for ancillary industries, suppliers, and service providers. By integrating support services and encouraging innovation, it will not only improve efficiency but also stimulate the local economy and enhance India’s participation in global trade.
Aligned with Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047
This partnership reflects SDHI’s long-term commitment to India’s Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, which aims to position the country as a global leader in shipbuilding and maritime innovation. Through infrastructure upgrades, skill development, and industry clustering, the collaboration is expected to usher in a new era of growth and competitiveness for the Indian maritime ecosystem.
