The Government of India has approved 23 chip design projects under the Design Linked Incentive (DLI) scheme, aimed at boosting the country’s semiconductor ecosystem. The move supports startups and MSMEs, including Bengaluru-based Vervesemi Microelectronics, to accelerate the design and development of chips and System-on-Chip (SoC) solutions.
23 Chip Design Projects Get Green Signal
According to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), the 23 approved projects focus on creating semiconductor solutions for:
- Surveillance cameras
- Smart energy meters
- Networking systems
- Microprocessor IPs
To further strengthen the design ecosystem, 72 companies have been granted access to Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools for R&D and design support.
Spotlight on Vervesemi Microelectronics
Among the startups benefitting from the DLI scheme is Vervesemi Microelectronics, a fabless semiconductor company founded in 2017 and headquartered in Bengaluru.
- Portfolio includes 110+ intellectual properties (IPs), 25 IC SKUs, 10 patents, and 5 trade secrets.
- Active across aerospace, defence, energy, and industrial applications.
- Participated in the government-backed Chips to Startup (C2S) programme.
Vervesemi’s IC Product Roadmap (2025–2026)
The company has laid out a detailed roadmap for upcoming integrated circuits (ICs), with product sampling expected between 2025 and 2026:
- Weighing scale & bridge sensor ASICs – sampling by end-2025
- Smart energy metering ASICs – sampling by end-2025
- BLDC controller ASICs for small motors – sampling in 2026
- Motor-control ASICs for EVs, drones & automation – sampling in 2026
- Data acquisition ASICs for aerospace & avionics – engineering samples in 2026
India’s Semiconductor Push
The DLI scheme is part of India’s larger semiconductor strategy. The Union Cabinet has cleared 10 chipmaking projects worth ₹1.6 trillion across six states.
- Recently, four projects were approved, including proposals from SiCSem, CDIL, 3D Glass Solutions Inc., and ASIP Technologies.
- These involve investments of about ₹4,600 crore.
- Expected to create over 2,000 direct jobs and significant indirect employment opportunities.
Key Takeaways
- 23 semiconductor design projects approved under the DLI scheme.
- Startups like Vervesemi Microelectronics playing a key role in chip innovation.
- Focus areas include surveillance, smart metering, networking, EVs, and aerospace.
- Part of a ₹1.6 trillion semiconductor push aimed at making India a global hub.
