The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) reported a historic milestone in June 2025, with 21.89 lakh net member additions, the highest monthly tally since the launch of payroll data analytics in April 2018. This reflects a 9.14% growth over May 2025 and a 13.46% increase year-on-year compared to June 2024.
Surge in Fresh Enrolments
In June 2025, EPFO welcomed 10.62 lakh fresh subscribers, up 12.68% month-on-month and 3.61% year-on-year. The 18–25 age group accounted for the majority of new joiners, with 6.39 lakh youth entering the formal workforce under the EPFO framework.
Net payroll additions for this demographic touched 9.72 lakh, marking an 11.41% rise over May 2025 and a 12.15% increase from June 2024, underscoring stronger youth participation in formal employment.
Returning Members Drive Growth
A sharp rebound in returning members further boosted net additions. Nearly 16.93 lakh individuals rejoined EPFO after a service break, reflecting a 5.09% increase from May 2025 and a 19.65% jump year-on-year. Importantly, most returning members transferred their previous PF balances instead of withdrawing, signaling stronger financial planning and a greater commitment to long-term social security.
Rising Female Participation
EPFO also reported encouraging growth in female workforce enrolments. Around 3.02 lakh new women subscribers joined in June 2025, up 14.92% from May 2025 and 1.34% higher year-on-year.
Net payroll additions for women stood at 4.72 lakh, showing 11.11% monthly growth and a 10.29% rise year-on-year. This trend highlights a gradual increase in women’s participation in formal employment and reflects progress towards gender inclusivity in the workforce.
States and Sectors Leading the Growth
Five states and union territories contributed 61.51% of total net payroll additions in June 2025. Maharashtra led with 20.03%, followed by Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Telangana, each contributing more than 5%.
Key Takeaway
With record-high member additions, strong youth enrolments, rising female participation, and a significant rebound in returning members, EPFO continues to play a critical role in strengthening India’s formal workforce and social security system.
